Microsoft Surface: Is This Is What Called Following Apple?

Microsoft has finally got its device for a preview on its website which is a tablet device. The video published by Microsoft is highly artistic although doesn’t show any utility of the device yet. But how do people come to the same point as they generally speak about, which is called “Apple Following”. I mean to say, whether this is justified or not?

Today I found this picture on Facebook that really gave me a point to think about. The questions were about innovation as well as aggressive marketing. So the point that has to be kept in consideration right now is the marketing strategy that the company is having and which strategy goes to which product.

Why Microsoft Tablet Failed [2002]?

Lets make things clear now. As you have seen the picture above you may now also have tons of questions in your minds. Specially if you are a Microsoft fan or an Apple fan. Whoever saw the event that was there in 2002, when the first ever (as the world says*) tablet came out to the market, may remember it easily the strategy Microsoft went ahead with. At least I don’t remember any form of marketing as Apple did for iPad. Apart from this the tablet was running a common operating system that was the Windows XP . So the points are :

  • No exciting marketing for the new device that was introduced.
  • The same operating system that is there for the desktops/notebooks was there on the tablet.

Now how does this make a difference? Its obvious from the first point that the lack of marketing could not create the hype that was required for the product to gain massive attention. In fact the product was considered as an alternative for the computer and not something that it has an existence of its own. The second point as I have mentioned made it clear that it was running Windows XP, that is an operating system made for desktop hardware(which is powerful than the mobile hardware). Nothing like apps dedicated for the touch interface or any utility associated with it. Apart from all this no dedicated market place for any of the things. Not only this the operating system that requires a combination of powerful hardware, keyboard and a mouse was left in a condition which didn’t have a proper functionality of its own. Added by the lack of advertising or efforts to promote the product also led to the death of the product that didn’t even came into proper existence.

Apple Comes Up With the iPad

Now we all saw the marketing that Apple went ahead with to promote its device. Apart from this we saw the tremendous amount of apps that came out for an operating system that was dedicated to the device. So all the weakness that Microsoft had was something Apple didn’t have. Boom ! iPad successful.

Now Why Microsoft Copied Apple

The above you can see the device and the video has been presented by Microsoft, where the device runs a mobile operating system( as rumored would be called Windows RT). There would also be an app store for the device and the various other things that Android and iOS have are also included in this.

Another Big Point

Still for all those who think that Microsoft is not copying or following Apple should have a look at the video below. This video is created by RWW. Hope you enjoy. The best part is when the device hangs !

Moreover I would call this as copying Apple. If any one disagrees with me, then the comment section below is always open for a peaceful and a thoughtful conversation.

*P.S. Apple introduced their first tablet called Newton in 1993.
